Google was recently fined by Italy's communications regulator, Autorità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni (AGCOM), for making gambling and betting ads. According to the entity, Google is allegedly violating the rules of the "Dignity Decree", which was implemented on January 1, 2019. The decree prohibits any type of advertisements about games and betting. Although exact amounts were not reported on the amount of the fine, it is speculated that Google would have been fined around € 100,000.

According to the Italian communications regulator, the company Google would have allowed sponsored advertisements to appear in its search results for an online casino. In AGCOM's position, the entity reported that the company "released the paid ad for the website sublimecasino.com, which places bets with cash winnings".

According to AGCOM itself, the assessment of the case was carried out through Regulation (EU) 2019/1150, which allows "suppliers to be penalized for indexing services established abroad that offer services to the Italian public".

Despite all of the situation, this was not the first case involving Google and the regulator. In 2018, the research company and other functions had entered into an agreement to exclude content that was linked to gambling and bets on the search tool in Italy. However, AGCOM began investigating the search engine after several ads for games and bets appeared in searches across the country in September this year.

The Autorità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni is the entity that independently administers the regulations and guarantees of Italy. Today the company has its headquarters in Naples and an office in Rome operating on a secondary basis. In addition, the entity has the responsibility to guarantee competition from operators in the market and to protect the freedom and pluralism of the population in telecommunications.

AGCOM members are elected through the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The president of the body is responsible for choosing the Prime Minister in conjunction with the Minister for Economic Development.
